Sally Hansen Palm Beach Jelly Watercolor Tutorial

Happy Sunday polished world! As promised, to day I am sharing with you my tutorial for the watercolor manicure I did using the Sally Hansen Palm Beach Jellies! Goodness, I love these polishes. If you were a reader yesterday and are itching to see what I did, then let's take a look at the tutorial!!! :)

Colors Used:

Sinful Colors - Snow Me White
Sally Hansen - Vitamin D-Light, Sea Through, Ice Mint, Grape Jelly, Water Melon

Tutorial:

Start off with a base coat of your favorite white polish. If it is a sheer white, I suggest using two coats since these jellies are sheer and you can see your base through the design.
Pick a polish and begin your water color! For mine, I started with Vitamin D-Light since this was the lightest and you could build the best on top of it. Apply the polish randomly on the nail using the brush itself. I did so by dripping a tiny bit on the nail and painting it towards the edge.
With another polish, I followed what I did in step 2 just in a different place on the nail.
Repeat
Repeat again, but start filling in the blank white areas.
Repeat one last time filling in the last few blank areas. Make sure there is no white left on the nail!
Add a holo glitter top coat! Enjoy!

Do not be upset if you overlap any of the colors on accident. This overlap makes the look and gives it more of a watercolor finish!

Okay, kind of didn't need to make all the steps for this tutorial since it kind of is straight forward after the first few, but I think it's helpful!

Now, if you do not have the Palm Beach Jellies, no worries, you can achieve this look with the OPI Sheer tints and any other squishy jelly polishes you may own! I believe Loaded Lacquer created some awesome jellies a few months ago that I believe would work kind of awesomely for this kind of design!

Watercolor Manicure Using Sally Hansen Palm Beach Jellies

Good morning polished peeps! Hope you all have a fantastic Saturday planned! I'm pretty much laying low since I have felt a tad under the weather. Maybe I'll do a little web shopping and get the purse I have been eyeing at Target. Hint: it's mint.

Have you heard about my newest obsession? If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, then you would know that I'm obsessed with the Sally Hansen Palm Beach Jellies. Now, this is really really odd for me seeing previously I have only owned two jelly polishes and had no idea how to use it. I failed at a jelly sandwich. Yes, you read that right, failed at a jelly sandwich. Don't ask.

Well, after seeing the OPI Sheer Tints and all the amazing things one could do with them, I had to find them. I tweeted Sally Beauty Supply asking if they were going to get them in, and sadly they responded that they weren't. I then struggled with the idea of purchasing them at Ulta, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much on something that I may not like. Then, I saw this post on Nouveau Cheap featuring swatches and reviews of the Sally Hansen Palm Beach Jellies. Holy gorgeous, I needed to find them, especially after seeing her watercolor manicure! Lucky for me, first store I went to, I found a full display. I snagged five out of the six, ran home, and started doing a watercolor manicure like hers.

Let's take a look! Okay, my camera couldn't capture them how I wanted and they're more pastel looking than what they were in person.

Colors Used:

Sinful Colors - Snow Me White
Sally Hansen - Water Melon, Grape Jelly, Sea Through, Ice Mint, Vitamin D-Light

Omgoodness, super cute right? I LOVE these polishes! I can see myself using these for so many different nail art designs. Before I did this water color, I tried to do a tape manicure and my nails looked like stained glass. I got kind of lazy though after doing two nails and gave up, so I will be doing that soon..

I personally believe that you need a white base if you really want these to show on the nails. Like the OPI Sheer Tints, these are sheer and are just like a stain on the naked nail. When you put them on top of white, you really see the color pop. When they overlap with themselves or with one another they become darker.

Out of all five of them, Grape Jelly was the sheerest. Kind of a shame since it looks amazing in the bottle. You can get it to build if you apply a second coat. The second sheerest was Ice Mint (blue). Sea Through and Water Melon are my favorite and the least sheer. I think these two you could create a decent jelly sandwich with. Vitamin D-Light is that middle one that's still sheer but not too sheer. Not too sure you could create a sandwich with it, but it's awesome none the less.

Here you can see how the colors are more bright. I added the glitter because, well, it's glitter and how could you not? I received so many compliments on these nails from customers at work. They thought they were nail stickers and kept asking me how I did it. A few of them had seen the display of the Beach Jellies and had no idea why someone would want them, then after seeing this needed to go purchase a few for themselves.

Here's a shot from my cell phone. This is the closest I could get to what these polishes looked like in real life. You can see the sheer purple clearer in this photo. Why couldn't I get my actual camera to do this?

Nail Artist of the Month

April Nail Artist of the Month - Reinovate

Good Morning Polished World! Hope you all are having a great week! It's the beginning of April, so that means it's time to introduce you all to another Nail Artist of the Month. I can't begin to tell you how much I love these posts each month.

Today I am pleased to introduce you to Rei, the lovely blogger from Reinovate. I met Rei on Instagram after she commented on a few of my posts. I quickly fell in love with her blog, designs, and photos. You'll see in the post why I love her photos. I'm also seriously jealous of her nail shape/length. If I grew my nails out to be that length, they would look awful. Hers are perfect.

Enough of my babbling, time for Rei to take over The Little Canvas!

Hi everyone! I'm really excited to be on The Little Canvas! I remember Alaina was one of the first people I started following when I got into the nail world so I'm super flattered she asked me to create something to share with you guys to be her blogger of the month!

I'll start off with a little blurb about me and how I got into nails... I always liked painting my nails/the idea of nail polish but my awareness and collection started growing in high school I would say. That's when I started to paint my nails several times a week and when people started to notice I had an obsession... haha. Towards the end of high school I started stumbling upon all these cool blogs and the big world of nail art. I think one of the first few things I saw was stamping and that blew my mind. And the beginning of my college schooling, oh my gosh my collection started growing in the hundreds. It happened so fast! That's addiction for you. (Don't even get me started on indies.) I started my nail account and blog a little bit over a year ago and I am so happy I did! I learned so much about nail health and care, photographing my nails and I have made a lot of good friends! I continue to learn more every day and strive for improvement with every post. I've got plenty of other hobbies but this is the first I have actually put an effort in involving myself in with people outside of where I love. I'm so happy. It's such a different way to express myself and I LOVE being apart of this world and with grils who are just as obsessed about polish as I am, and nail polish is one size fits all so I think a fresh manicure or some awesome nail art can make anyone feel beautiful! So now I'm full blown nail addict and I live in central California :) onward to nails!

For this guest post I created a water marble! My mind is totally on springs and pastels so I chose the pretty Bubble Gum Pink by Sally Hansen and one of my favorite blues, China Glaze -Electric Beat. They both did very well in the water and I had no trouble drawing in the stripey design. Now I'm not so ambitious for a full water marble manicure so I decided to pair it with one of my favorite holo polishes Times Square by Square Hue

I get pretty happy whenever I get any type of water marble down, so I was excited how this came out! I really hope you guys enjoyed this post on Alaina's blog :) I know she has many amazing followers and I am happy she asked me to be on here today!

Goodness gracious, what an amazing water marble! Everything about this manicure is perfect, from the marble to the holo, it's a look I want on my own nails! Isn't it gorgeous? Teach me your water marbling ways!!!! As many of you may know, I just can't for the life of me figure it out. I would die to have this on my nails.

Can you also see why I love her photos? The bottles in the back highlight the manicure so well.

Twinsie Tuesday: Nails Inspired by Wallet

Good morning polished world! How are you all today? It's Tuesday, so that means it is yet another Twinsie Tuesday post! This week had me stumped. Today we are all to be inspired by a wallet, purse, or backpack. Well, my wallet is ugly, I have a black clutch, and a black purse. All rather boring. Since I am Alaina, I couldn't do a swatch of a black polish, I needed to do some art.

So I asked the lovely Beauty Buffs for some help, and all started posting amazing photos of their wallets and purses. Shira, from A Sequin Love Affair, posted so many amazing purses. I wish I could own her closet, she has amazing fashion sense. She posted some photos with fun colored bags, then there was a photo with a tan colored bag, but she had a mint colored dress on and it hit me. I've been obsessed lately with a mint wallet at Target with blue polka dots. I thought I shall do that!

When I went to Google and typed "Mint Wallet with Dots" instead of finding the beloved Target wallet I want, I found this wallet, a mint pretty with white polka dots and a cute bow! I took inspiration from this and got to work!

Let's take a look!

Colors Used:

Orly - Gumdrop
Zoya - Cosmo
Orly Instant Artist - Jet Black
Orly Instant Artist - White

Adorable, right?? I went with a silver accent nail because I thought the wallet would look even more amazing if it had a silver clasp or zipper. For that silver nail I used Zoya Cosmo from their Magical Pixie collection. Goodness, is this a gorgeous polish or what? It reminds me of a silver Tomoko with chunkier glitter pieces. I can't stop looking at it!

For my mint color, I used Orly Gumdrop which is more like a Tiffany Blue. I love the color of this polish, but not the formula. The first coat goes on perfectly normal, a tad streaky like most first coats are. Then it was time for the second coat...it still was kind of streaky! I had to use a third to fill in the bald spots, and it seemed to get a tad thick looking. Honestly though, the color made up for my frustrations with applying, and for the bow and as a nail art polish, it worked perfectly fine.

To do the bow, I dripped some Gumdrop out on a paper plate. With a medium sized dotting tool, I first added the center of the bow on my nail. I didn't do this directly in the center because I wanted to have the little ribbon pieces hanging and I knew if I put it in the center, then I wouldn't have room. When I liked the size and placement of the middle, I took my nail art brush and made two big ovals for the body of the bow, and added the hanging ribbons. After it was dry, with my Orly Instant Artist polish in black, I added the bow details. Then I went through and added the dots.

Speaking of dots....look at my pointer and pinkie fingers! I mastered the polka dot finally!!!! Before, I would start by going down the middle of my nail and then I would have weird uneven spots on the side. So this time around, I started with the second column first, then went to the middle then so on and so forth. They're so much more uniform all around! I can't explain it well, so maybe I'll do a tutorial.
